The Coronavirus outbreak has claimed 400 lives in China and tens of thousands are infected around the globe.

All of the casinos in the Chinese-autonomous region to suspend their operations for two weeks with the orders of the Macau government. This is not the first time that casino operations were involuntarily shut down. Back in 2018, Macau were also forced to shut their casino operations due the typhoon that struck the region.

Ho Iat-seng, Macau’s chief executive who recently took office in December, shared the news with reporters according to the English language Asian news network CNA.

“This is a difficult decision but we have to do it, for the health of our Macau residents,”

A total decline of 80 percent is has already being seen in the region. During normal times, the city of 631,000 residents usually attracts approximately 35 million a year with the majority coming from mainland China. This figure will continue to decrease this year and will hit the bottom line of many big international corporations in Macau including Sands Macau,The Venetian Macao, Melco Crown Entertainment (City of Dreams), MGM Macau, and Wynn Macau.

Is is possible for the Macau casinos to be closed longer than two weeks if the virus continues to spread.
